Grab Your Rosary Beads, Mr. Romney

Our moms always told us to not mix politics and religion, but if a group of feisty Catholic nuns have their way, they’ll soon be providing presidential hopeful Mitt Romney a dose of reality via Catholicism. The Nuns on Bus tour traveled the country and really put a spotlight on the struggles Americans face. These are types of problems and crises we don’t see in mainstream media, but if Romney accepts their invitation to spend a day with the nuns, he’s sure to learn a thing or two about integrity, compassion and perhaps even fear.

Citing the budget prepared by the Republicans, the Catholic lobbying group used a new Romney ad to justify its invitation:

Recent advertisements and statements from the campaign of Governor Romney demonize families in poverty and reflect woeful ignorance about the challenges faced by tens of millions of American families in these tough economic times,

stated Sister Simone Campbell.

We are all God’s children and equal in God’s eyes. Efforts to divide us by class or score political points at the expense of the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters reveal the worst side of our country’s politics.

Budget Plan

Specifically, the group is concerned about the Republican budget plan – which ironically was written by newly announced VP hopeful Paul Ryan – and includes significant cuts in many social welfare programs and other safety nets. For Romney’s part, he’s already proposed huge tax cuts for the rich and at the cost of low income and middle income Americans. The sisters called it “immoral” and that it would result in devastating losses for communities and would hamper their efforts of helping those who rely on them.

Part of the letter reads:

We are deeply troubled by your campaign’s recent advertisements and statements about welfare, which we believe demonize the families we serve and reflect a woeful lack of knowledge about the challenges faced by tens of millions of Americans. By accepting our invitation, we hope that you will have the opportunity to see firsthand the struggles of those in need and have the compassion to desist your campaign’s harsh attacks.

Get a Clue

They’re hoping Romney will agree to the day-long invitation so that he can witness the one thing most politicians never take into consideration: the poverty-ridden communities, homelessness and fear of those who feel as though their lots in life don’t take them any further than their front doors. They say this would allow him to “get a clue” about the struggles of millions of Americans, including no access to affordable financial resources, medical care, education and sadly, sometimes even shelter and food. If he accepts, he will hopefully come to realize,

…food programs ‘provide a hand up’ to the community’s neediest members. He thinks they’re lazy. It is hard work to keep things together when you’re poor. He doesn’t have a clue. Let him talk to them, and maybe they’ll touch his heart. And his mind too.

said one spokesperson for the group.

While the Romney camp has yet to comment, much less accept or decline the invitation, the nuns say they’re hopeful. One said, “I’ll take whatever I can get.. He should accept.” They’re also hoping they can convince him to stop with the “misleading television ads about welfare reform.
